| The problem of intellectuals is genetically related to the question of the social functions of scientific knowledge. An intellectual in the European tradition is regarded as a link connecting science and society, making the transition from concrete scientific knowledge to the general socio-political issues. In this context, the notion of an intellectual is determined not by the reference to his line of work, but through the social functions that he performs outside the scientific community. The main social function of an intellectual is social design, formulation of common social objectives. Modern intellectuals are facing a choice between the neoliberal social project and the collective social project, the question of whether individual freedom can be regarded as a universal social purpose. Keywords: intellectual, truth, ideology, social design, social functions of scientific knowledge | 825
| The article is focused on the methods of compounds’ distinguishing in the English language. The notions of grammatical continuity and semantic integrity of a lexical combination are analysed. Various criteria of differentiating compounds from phrases are observed: phonetic, orthographic, morphologic, syntactic and semantic. Special emphasis in laid on the practical application of each criterion. It is shown that none of them can be used alone for making precise differentiation between compounds and phrases. Each of them should be supported by approximately two other criteria. Therefore, the author gives examples of the most effective ways of using the methods described in the article. Keywords: compound, phrase, grammatical continuity, semantic integrity, lexical unit, word-building | 825
| The paper discusses the compositional semantics of adjective-noun combinations like fake gun. Compositionality appears to be one of the most cognitively basic principles guiding semantic research. This study argues the claim of formal semantics that the meaning of an expression is a function of the meanings of its parts and of the way they are syntactically combined. The article adduces support for the claim that the meaning of the whole cannot be predicted from the meanings of the parts and the way they are put together. The investigation makes an attempt to find the relations between formally integrated linguistic structure and conceptually integrated structures. The adjective fake is seen as privative for which an instance of the adjective + noun combination is never an instance of the noun alone. Complexes with fake entail the negation of the noun modified by fake. The paper accounts for the meaning of adjective-noun combinations in terms of conceptual integration. Within the framework of mental spaces theory the adjective fake prompts for a specific complex mapping scheme and emerges a novel conceptual blend. In terms of conceptual blending the adjective fake calls for two input spaces with a disanalogy connector such that an element in one place is real, but in the other is not. The article highlights combinatorial possibilities of fake. Of particular concern is the issue that the appropriate use of fake requires the activation of an appropriate frame. 4855 | Introduction. The article offers a selection and classification of modern English language units of terminological character with etymological comments. The aim of the paper is to consider terminologisms or terms with transferred meaning. Terminologism is a language unit with several components which has either direct terminological or professional meaning. This direct meaning becomes the basis for derived, figurative meaning. It is fixed in speech as a result of repeated use. Material and methods. The language material of this article includes 555 terminological units collected from special philological researches and specialized modern dictionaries of English idioms. The analyzed language units are divided into subgroups by source. The most productive areas of terminology are sports, military and maritime fundamentals, gambling. Moreover, there is reference to language units from the hunting area, theatre, arts, and various sciences. Further on, terminologisms are considered from the point of view of transparency, deducibility of their meaning: both direct and figurative. Results and discussion. It is noted that such fixed expressions can be both completely transparent, clear and completely opaque. Transparent terminologisms, as a rule, are understandable due to the inner form (components) and figurative meaning. Transparent terminologisms are known and recognizable because of general cultural background of the addressee as well. Opaque terminologisms are divided into two groups. On the one hand, there are fixed expressions that contain a specific component. This specific component is a term with the meaning unknown to common people. On the other hand, the inner form of the fixed expression is not entirely understandable. Although all the components are clear, the image conveyed by the term is not clear at all. As a result, the figurative meaning of this term is not deducible. The article comments on the meanings of terminologisms which are considered difficult for understanding. Real examples and dictionary definitions of direct and figurative meanings are given. At the end, the results of the study are summarized. Conclusion. The result of the survey can be used in the special course on modern English phraseology. As a subject of further research, it is assumed that the media and the Internet have the potential for the formation of new modern English terminological units and terminologisms as well. Keywords: idiom, etymology, terminology, terminologism, transparency of idioms | 825
| Introduction. The study focuses on news discourse and on its persuasive dimension in particular. News discourse has a number of standard strategies to promote the persuasive process for assertions. If propositions are to be accepted as true or plausible, there must be special means to enhance their appearance of truth and plausibility. Material and methods. The theoretical perspective of the paper is the critical epistemic discourse analysis proposed by T. A. van Dijk. The paper considers mental representation of the event nominated in British and American mass media as RUSSIAN SPY POISONING. Results and discussion. The study highlights the evasion strategy as a form of discourse-based mental influence in news discourse. From a pragmatic approach evasion is viewed as violation of one of the conversational maxims formulated by P. Grice which requires contributions to conversations to be truthful. The author claims that the aim of the evasion strategy in representing news is to discursively emphasize those properties of mental models that are consistent with the interests of the dominant social groups and discursively deemphasize those properties that are inconsistent with their interests. Consequently, evasion strategy results in partial, incomplete or biased understanding of the news story in the interests of a dominant social group. Evasion presupposes formulation of meanings in such a way that they are not merely understood but also accepted as the truth or at least as a possible truth. The article discusses strategic devices of evasion like hedging, referential vagueness, focus shift, selective use of evidential and epistemic markers, half truth. Conclusion. The author comes to the conclusion that evasion strategy contributes to the formation or reactivation of preferred mental models and may thus be used in manipulative discourse use. Keywords: evasion strategy, news discourse, vagueness, hedging, foregrounding, focus shift, manipulation | 825

| The article deals with basic periods of formation and development of communicative stylistics of text, which has been growing at the Tomsk State Pedagogical University since 1992 at the department of modern Russian and stylistics (from the end of 2017 the department of the Russian language). Peculiarities of this scientific school and factors that defined its dynamics in scientific context of linguistics at the end of XX – beginning of XXI century are described in the article. In the light of the ideas of the communicative paradigm of linguistic knowledge, in the nineties and early 2000s, the achievements of related sciences are formed that fall under the traditional and functional stylistics, functional lexicology and the theory of the communicative text: the main directions of the communicative stylistics of the text: on the verge of linguistic pragmatics – the regulative theory, on the verge of psycholinguistics – theory of text associations, on the verge of philological hermeneutics – the theory of semantic expansion of the text. Each of these areas of communicative stylistics is aimed at researching the effectiveness of dialogue between the author and the reader with the use of text. The main is the systemic and active approach to the text as a form of communication and the phenomenon of idiostyle of the language personality, which is “left” outside the text. Ideas of communicative and active approach to the text, which are realized in works of this trend, were called for the methods of teaching the Russian language. The basic periods of communicative stylistics of text development are due to new tendencies in language and speech research, connected to extension of units of analysis and to intensification of cognitive and discursive aspects of textual activity, expansion of empirical base of researches, that includes at the beginning of XXI century poetic, advertising, epistolary, media discourses. Cognitive and media vector of development is typical for modern communicative stylistics of text. It is obvious that there is the necessity of further expansion of empirical material associated with genre and style variety of up-to-date media communication, elaboration of typology of informational and media language personalities, research of cognitive aspects of their idiostyle as well as perfection of methods of different types of texts’ analysis in perspective. Keywords: communicative stylistics, regulative theory, theory of textual associations, theory of semantic expansion of text, tendencies and periods of scientific school development, text, language personality, idiostyle | 823
| The urgency of establishing the essence of the term “competence-oriented task” is determined by the orientation toward achieving substantive, meta-subject and personal results of education in the secondary school educational practice. This category, widely used in pedagogical science and educational practice, does not quite justifiably relate to the concept of a task of a practical nature. The establishment of the specificity of competence-oriented tasks is carried out on the basis of an analysis of the positions of different authors, not only in understanding this category, but also in the semantically close to it concepts of “contextual task” and “situational task”, and also in connection with the modern interpretation of the learning task as a means of forming integrated educational result. The conclusion is drawn on the understanding of competence-oriented tasks as the tasks that, along with the formation of the subject competences of the student, determine the development of such qualities that determine the ability and readiness for independent cognitive activity, that is, the qualities whose totality determines the concept of cognitive competence. Examples of competence-oriented tasks are considered. Requirements to competency-oriented tasks in teaching mathematics are formulated. Proceeding from the structural and content features of cognitive competence as a significant component of an integral system of personality characteristics of a school graduate, the requirements that must be met in competence-oriented problems of school mathematics are established. 4893 | The article discusses one of the most urgent applied problems of language teaching: the creation of didactic materials of a new generation based on information and communication technologies (ICT) and the Internet. First of all, we consider the already existing experience in using ICT and the Internet in education in the USA and Western Europe, where the process to introduce digital technologies in education started much earlier than in Russia. The review of experience of introducing this kind of training materials into practice provides grounds for asserting that the use of ICT and Internet technologies in developing teaching materials creates new opportunities and also new (not yet fully studied) difficulties. It is shown that the means of presenting information (and, therefore, its format) impacts the nature of information processing, assimilation and retention: digital texts are much less fully and accurately comprehended by readers than texts in the traditional format (printed on paper). This is due to the psycho-physiological and psychological mechanisms of perception and comprehension of text information given on paper and on the monitor screen. Further, processing a digital text causes the reading activity itself to be transformed. Now the complete set of reading skills, needed for in-depth processing of information, independent text analysis, is not required. Finally, the norms of organization of texts posted on the Web are changing. “Traditional” texts (including classical scientific, literary texts), constructed according to other models, cannot be fully perceived and comprehended from the monitor screen. The above-mentioned difficulties in a number of cases (for example, when teaching extensive and intensive reading) become a serious obstacle to the realization of teaching objectives. Understanding the emerging problems allows us to formulate new methodological challenges a teacher faces when preparing e-learning courses on extensive and intensive reading for foreign students, and also to suggest some practical steps aimed at solving these problems.
