The Origin of the Numeral «One» and its Functioning in the Khanty Language Dialects
The article deals with the problem of the numeral «one» and its functioning in the Khanty language dialects. The Khanty numeral «one» (western ij /eastern Щj) could have been formed out of Finno-Ugrian stem *ike, *ьke and originally meant «unity». The differences in the sound shape of the numeral «one» in the Khanty language are determined, on the one hand, by dialectal phonetic varieties, and on the other – by its functional peculiarities, i.e. whether it performs attributive or non-attributive functions.
