The question of developing professional competency of a specialist (in engineering) is raised in the article. On the basis of the study undertaken, the project technique is the optimal condition of this process. The author tries to reveal principles and rules of organization of project activity of students and to characterize the method in the terms of competency building approach. Great attention is paid to reflection which can be encouraged by means of the method in question.
