Categories of Ethnos and Ethnicity in Modern Scientific Discourse

In this article there are main approaches of studying the ethnology phenomenon which are quite popular in Russian science nowadays. The maintenance of the approaches reveals their strong and weak points. The author tries to make the comparative analysis of present concepts and theories. The definitions of ethnos and ethnology are given in the article; the special attention is paid to the problem of the ethnic substance. The basic representatives of the described scientific directions are denoted. The tendency in evolution of research approaches is traced.
