Comprehensive Biotechnology Education and Rural Economic Development
North Carolina is home to the third largest biotechnology industry in the United States. With over 200 companies involved in manufacturing, research, testing or services and growing at a rate of 12 % per year, this North Carolina industry is aggressively expanding its biotechnology efforts in all domains: pharmaceuticals, agriculture, environment, foods and energy. The North Carolina Department of Commerce along with other state and regional entities are developing strategies to attract new companies into the state, especially its rural regions. In order to meet the workforce needs, the education sector is being funded and mobilized for development of new courses, programs and facilities. This paper will discuss comprehensive regional and statewide initiatives to increase biotechnology education at North Carolina secondary schools, community colleges and universities in order to meet the present and future needs of the North Carolina biotechnology sector
