1 | The article deals with the questions of modern geopolitics of Southern Caucasus and the process of origin of the new unrecognized states: Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorny Karabah. It determines the role of Russia in the course of settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and rendering assistance to Abkhazia and South Ossetia in their acknowledgement as the independent states. A change in the political situation in the South Caucasus region is largely due to the geopolitical processes that often are civilized nature and depend on trends, which were formed during the Soviet era and created a latent conflict situation, which had been transferred to the open phase in modern history. The Russian Federation serves as the main ”peacemaker“ in the region, initiating the negotiation process in cases where it is possible and helping to gain the support of States seeking to gain sovereignty and genuine statehood, using his constitutional right to self-prescribe in international law.
