1 | In the story Varenka Kovalenko sings the song The Winds Blow several times. In the song a young woman talks of her passion to her lover, or fiancйe who is separated from her and leaves either for different distant place, or even for exile. The author of this song is the Ukrainian poetess of XVII century Marusya Churay. We can see the shade of her fate casting on Varenka. Varenka’s brother Mikhail Kovalenko used to call his colleague Belikov - a Swallower, or Spider after the play of M. Kropivnitsky. The revelation of Ukrainian origins of the Chekhov’s story gives the opportunity to consider implied sense in the Burkin’s monologue its Lyric (Varenka) and Dramatic ( her brother Mikhail) sides.
