The article is an analysis of the form and contents of Goethe's well-known poem, written in 1780 in the wall of a house at Kikelhan. The author tries to penetrate into the poet's soul at the age of 31 and makes an attempt to prove that in spite of the stability of Goethe's social and material position and his most creative period of life the poet believes that only death will bring him real peace of mind.
