The article gives the critical analysis of biomorphoiogical terminology that is used in modern botany. Different approaches to the plant life form as a key term in biomorphology that are taken in different Russian and Western European research schools are discussed. On the base of the icritical analysis, expediency of physiognomic approach to the definition of plant life form is shown.
